Four Odias honoured with Padma Shri | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: Four eminent persons from Odisha — sculptor Adwaita Charan Gadanayak, Odissi Guru Durga Charan Ranbir, noted writer Pratibha Satpathy, and neurosurgeon Dr Ashok Mohapatra — were named for Padma Shri award for their contributions to the fields of art, literature and medicine. The Centre announced the names of the recipients of Padma awards on Saturday.
“I am so happy. After 45 years in this field, being honoured with the Padma Shri is a matter of happiness indeed,” Gadanayak told TOI.
Gadanayak, born in Dhenkanal district, was a student of BK College of Arts and Crafts, Bhubaneswar, and pursued his post graduation at Slade School of Fine Arts, London, in 1995. He won the National Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1993, the Odisha Lalit Kala Akademi Award in 1999, and the Scottish International Sculpture Award in 1996. Gadanayak’s most famous projects included ‘Dandi March’, the famous sculpture of Gandhiji at Raj Ghat, and several others in Delhi, London, and Lampsdeen, UK. Gadanayak was also director general of National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi.
Expressing his happiness, Ranbir said that, though late, the govt considered his name for the award, and he is happy. “I used to think, if I have done anything for Odissi dance, then I will surely get the Padma Shri one day,” said 73-year-old Ranbir. Ranbir is a disciple of Odissi exponent Guru Deba Prasad Das and is instrumental in promoting his style across the world.
Eminent poet and writer Satpathy was selected for the Padma Shri for her contribution to literature and education. “It is an honour and a responsibility too. I am happy that the govt acknowledged my work. I will keep writing for the society,” she said. The 80-year-old writer penned numerous poems that resonate with the themes of life, nature, and humanity.
Former director of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar and noted neurosurgeon Dr Mohapatra said, “I have been doing my duty over the years without expecting an award. I am happy that my name was considered by the govt.”
Dr Mohapatra led a team of surgeons, who successfully conducted the rare craniopagus surgery of conjoined twins Jaga and Balia of Odisha.
