Mumbai: Dr Snehlata Deshmukh, former vice-chancellor of Mumbai University and a renowned paediatric surgeon, passed away at her home in Vile Parle on Monday morning, following a brief illness. She was 85 years old. Her last rites were performed later in the day. Deshmukh has been credited with a lot of reforms in her role both as an educationist and as a doctor.As the MU vice-chancellor between 1995 and 2000, she was instrumental in starting the now popular self-financed courses such as the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM), B Sc-IT and computer science, among others. The historic decision of including the mother’s name on the university’s degree certificates and admission documents was also taken during her tenure. She also played a key role in the creation of the university’s distance learning and online education centres, as well as the Ratnagiri sub-campus.
Deshmukh had co-founded the paediatric surgery department at KEM Hospital and at Sion Hospital, where she was the dean.tnn
