Former MPs, ex-min in race for AIADMK RS seats; one candidate likely to be an SC | Chennai News – Times of India

Chennai: Hectic parleys are underway within the AIADMK as several leaders, including former MPs Anwhar Raajhaa and S Semmalai, and former minister D Jayakumar, are seeking nominations to the Rajya Sabha. Party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is considering their requests and has called meetings with district secretaries and functionaries on Thursday and Friday. “No decision has been taken yet on the candidates. One of them will likely be from the Scheduled Castes,” said a senior leader. Anwhar Raajhaa reportedly met EPS on Wednesday night to lobby for a nomination. The former minority wing leader gained prominence when he opposed the BJP govt’s Triple Talaq bill.“The party lost its minority vote base to the opposition after striking an alliance with the BJP. Choosing a leader from the minority community will send a signal to the public,” said a minority wing leader. The AIADMK has 62 MLAs and can expect the backing of four MLAs each from the BJP and O Panneerselvam’s faction. This means the party is positioned to comfortably win two seats. A senior leader said, “The announcement of nominees is unlikely to be made this week as the notification for the election will be issued only on June 2.”
