Former Markfed godown in-charge gets 3-yr RI for swindling Rs 17L | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: The special vigilance court, Berhampur, on Friday sentenced the former godown in-charge of Markfed at Buguda in Ganjam district, to three years of rigorous imprisonment for misappropriation of over Rs 17.76 lakh over 21 years ago.
Special judge Arun Kumar Sahoo also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict, identified as Pradipta Kumar Parija (68). “He would undergo an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine,” said Surendra Nath Panda, special public prosecutor.
“The court, however, acquitted Bhuban Mohan Das (71), former area manager of Markfed, Jagannathpur, near here, who was also implicated in the case by the vigilance, due to lack of evidence,” he said.
“The judge pronounced the sentence after examining 14 witnesses and verifying all related documents,” Panda said.
After receiving allegations of misappropriation of fertiliser from the Markfed godown in Buguda, a vigilance team conducted a surprise check in Aug 2004. During verification, they found a shortage of various fertilisers in the godown. During cross-checking of the stock and documents from July 26, 2001, to Aug 2004, they found the misappropriation of fertilisers worth over Rs 17.76 lakh.
Vigilance sleuths registered a case against Das and Parija on Aug 12, 2004, sources said.
