Bhubaneswar: A 48-year-old forester, Sisir Sahu, was found dead with severe burn injuries at his residence in Nayagarh town on Saturday. Police suspect his wife and son, angered over his alleged extra-marital affair, attempted to disguise a premeditated murder as a fire accident.Sisir’s wife was admitted to Nayagarh district headquarters hospital with minor burn injuries. She will be discharged on Sunday, after which police are likely to question her and their 23-year-old son.“After interrogation of the duo (wife and son) and gathering of material evidence, the exact sequence of events leading to Sahu’s death can be ascertained. However, investigation so far has revealed that it is a case of homicide, and the wife and son are the only suspects as they were inside the house when the fire started,” said SDPO (Nayagarh), Jyoti Ranjan Samantray.Giving details about the crime scene, Samantray said imprints of fire were found all around the house, from the drawing room to the kitchen and bedrooms. “The deceased’s son told us his mother poured petrol on his father while they were having an argument in the living room and lit a matchstick. Prima facie evidence suggests Sahu, in order to save himself, ran from the drawing room to other rooms. But more petrol was poured on him to ensure that he succumbed to is burn injuries,” Samantray added.Police are wary of accepting the version of Sahu’s son that only his mother was involved in the crime. “The way the crime has manifested, it can’t be the handiwork of one person,” a senior police officer said.Police sources said from the early days of their marriage, Sahu and his wife got into arguments as she suspected he was having an affair. “Sahu would hardly come to his Nayagarh home. He would mostly stay at his place of posting. When he visited home, he would sleep in the car at night,” a police officer said.
