Folk Dance Forms: Revival of 15 Folk Dance Forms in Odisha by Government | Bhubaneswar News


Bhubaneswar: In three years, the govt has taken steps to revive at least 15 folk dance forms, Odia language and literature, culture minister Suryabanshi Suraj told the assembly on Friday in response to a question from Choudwar-Cuttack MLA Souvic Biswal.
The minister’s reply revealed that in 2021-22, the govt conducted ‘Dikshyant’, a programme to revive seven folk dancers like jhumar, kathi kandhei, ghumura, sakhi nata, singha badya, sabdapata nrutya and sola suhanga.In 2022-23, steps were taken to revive three dance forms – radha prem lila, mahuri and parva. In 2023-24, five folk dances were revived. These are dhunakei, banabadi, jodi nagara, kamana danda and suta kandhei. The culture department has spent Rs 16 lakh for it. “For conservation, training and popularisation, Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy conducted chhau dance training at its centre in Baripada, Ghumura in Bhawanipatna and Prahallad natak in Bhanjanagar,” the minister said.
