Focus on easing traffic, not on fines, cops told | Chennai News – The Times of India

Chennai: Traffic police across the city have been instructed not to gather in groups at single locations to fine motorists, but to maintain a visible presence to deter potential offenders.
In instructions issued to traffic police across the city, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) R Sudhakar said that no more than two police personnel should be posted at a particular spot to apprehend offenders.
Only officials above the rank of sub-inspector are authorized to issue challans and collect spot fines from motorists.
He emphasized the focus should be on alleviating traffic congestion in busy areas, particularly during peak hours, rather than solely issuing fines.
They have been advised against jumping in front of fast-moving vehicles, thereby risking the lives of both themselves and the motorists. The directive follows reports of traffic police stopping motorists in groups at various locations during peak hours.
He also asked them to educate drivers on road safety rules and focus on preventing serious violations like drunk driving and reckless driving. TNN
