Floods affect 35k people in 5 blocks of Balasore

Bhubaneswar: Flood situation continued to be grim in Balasore district on Thursday with over 35,000 people in five blocks affected by the Subarnarekha river. Over 21,000 people have been evacuated to safer places and provided with cooked food, official sources said. According to special relief commissioner’s office, river Subarnarekha in Balasore district is flowing above danger level, but it is receding.River Jalaka water level is also decreasing.
“It will take one or two days for the flood situation to become normal. Due to heavy rain in upper catchment area of Subarnarekha river, the water level went up and submerged large areas of Balasore district,” said Chandrasekhar Padhi, chief engineer, water resources department.
Residents of five blocks in Balasore district are facing several challenges as areas are under water for the last four to five days. The flood water entered all houses. “We are facing serious scarcity of drinking water as all sources have been submerged. No help from the govt has reached us. Many villagers are suffering from fever and water-borne diseases. Only mode of transportation is the power boat, but it is also coming once every three hours,” said Prasant Das, a resident of Baliapal block.
Six teams of ODRAF, one team of NDRF and 14 fire emergency teams are deployed in Balasore district for rescue and relief operation.
Sources said opening of gates at Chandili dam over Subarnarekha river in Jharkhand led to the flood. Apart from Balasore, 22 blocks in Mayurbhanj district, five blocks of Keonjhar and one block in Sundargarh district have been affected. Altogether 499 houses, including 334 in Mayurbhanj and 134 in Balasore districts have been damaged, the SRC office said.
