Flood fury shifts to east as Kosi level rises

Patna: The flood fury has shifted from the Gandak river basin in western Bihar to Kosi in the east, as the latter’s level rose on Tuesday, following the release of water from Barahkshetra dam in Nepal.
As a result, people still living in their villages between the two embankments of Kosi river have been asked to move to higher grounds.
According the flood bulletin released by the water resources department on Wednesday, the water discharge through Birpur barrage across river Kosi increased to 2.23 lakh cusec on Tuesday night from 1.75 lakh cusecs at 2pm after 23 of its gates were opened.
On Wednesday morning, 1.60 lakh cusec water was discharged through the barrage, but the discharge level came down to 1.44 lakh cusecs by 2pm.
Besides, there was increase in water level of the Kosi along its downstream.
Meanwhile, the floodwaters from river Gandak have started receding from parts of Gopalganj district.
