Berhampur: Five persons were arrested on Saturday for assaulting police personnel at Juba village under Gajapati district‘s Mohan police station limits on Friday. Two out of the five arrested were also found to be in possession of ganja at their homes, said Gajapati SP Jatindra Kumar Panda.
A huge quantity of ganja has also been seized from the village during raids by the police. The exact quantity will be determined only after weighting, which takes time, Panda said.
Several police officers along with 10 platoons of forces conducted raids in the village on Saturday to arrest the attackers. On seeing the forces, villagers started to flee. They also threw away the bags which contained ganja, said the SP.
On Friday, over 300 villagers allegedly attacked police personnel in Juba village while they were returning after seizing 30 quintals of ganja, resulting in 26 police personnel sustaining injuries.
SP Panda said the search to arrest the others allegedly involved in the attack and illegal stocking of the drugs is on. The crackdown on illegal stocking of the ganja will continue, he added.
