Fisherman shot over Rs 1,000 extortion | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: A fisherman was shot dead for allegedly refusing an extortion demand of Rs 1,000 in Mokama police station area of Patna district on Tuesday, triggering a protest by the local residents who blocked National Highway-31 on Wednesday.
Some local miscreants allegedly demand Rs 1,000 from every boat for plying on river Ganga in the area.
Mahendra Sahni (45), a resident of Nawada village in Mokama police station area, was heading towards Chhatpura Ganga Ghat with 20 other fishermen to catch fish, when unidentified criminals stopped them between More and Barahpur villages and demanded Rs 1,000 from them, according to a statement of his family members made to the police. When he refused to give in to the extortion demand, he was shot in the chest, they told police, adding the other fishermen rushed him to a private hospital in Begusarai, where he passed away late in the night.
Mokama station house officer (SHO) Maheshwar Prasad Rai said the statements of the family members and other fishermen have been recorded.
“The family members mentioned that some local goons are active in the diara areas. They allegedly take money from the fishermen to allow them to sail in the river to catch fish. Efforts are underway to identify the criminals involved in the incident. The family members reported that five or six criminals were involved,” the SHO said, adding police sent the body for postmortem to the sadar hospital.
