MUMBAI: An FIR was registered by the Dindoshi Police against the contractor-cum-site supervisor of an under-construction site where a cave-in resulted in the death of a labourer and two others getting injured on Friday. United Infra was handling work at the site, Amity Constructions, at Malad East. Police said no safety kits or helmets were provided to the affected labourers.
The FIR is based on the statement of one of the injured labourers, Sanjay Nishad, 32.Nishad told the police that foundation work was ongoing at the site and a labour contractor, Ravindra Shinde, had asked him to bring workers along for fabrication. On Friday, Nishad arrived at the site with his friend, Premchand Jaiswal, and two unknown labourers. Upon reaching the site, the two unknown labourers refused to work. However, Jaiswal and Nishad decided to wait for the fabricator to arrive.
In the meantime, the duo was asked to excavate for the building’s foundation work. Nishad told the police that he requested a helmet and safety kit but was given neither. He noticed another worker, Shashti Das, installing iron rods without donning any safety gear. The group worked from 11.30 am to 12.15 pm. Suddenly, there was a cave-in, trapping all three of them. Nishad reported that Jaiswal was completely buried, while he and Das were partially trapped. People present on the site rescued them with the help of the fire brigade, which was summoned. Jaiswal was pronounced dead at the hospital, while Nishad and Das received treatment.
Pravin Patel, the site supervisor-cum-contractor working for United Infra, was booked by Dindoshi Police for negligence.
