‘Irregularities’ in purchase of school bags rock council

Patna: Alleged financial irregularities in the purchase of bags to be distributed to the students of govt schools rocked the last day of monsoon session of legislative council, with several members demanding a probe into it.
MLC Sanjeev Kumar Singh on Friday came with a bag sample in the House which was distributed among the students. Sanjeev also showed a poor quality water bottle and a pencil distributed to the students.“The rate of this bag was fixed at Rs 1200, while it is available at Rs 120 in the market,” alleged Sanjeev. Other MLCs too raised their concern and alleged similar financial irregularities have been found in the procurement of benches, desks, utensils and maintenance of school building.
Education minister Sunil Kumar, while giving reply on the issue, said all the district magistrates had been instructed to check the benches, desks and other works related to the schools and take action against officials concerned if any irregularities were found. He also said that action has been taken against the district education officers and district programme officers of two districts for irregularities, adding, they will continue with such action if any fraud is found.
To another question raised by MLCs—Sanjay Kumar Singh, Sanjeev Kumar Singh and Jeevan Kumar—regarding delay in financial assistance to affiliated educational institutes for nearly eight years, chairperson Awadhesh Narain Singh instructed them to hold a meeting in his chamber to sort out the issue.
