Farmers: Farmers and Fishermen Protest Against BJD for Denied Land Rights in K’pada | Bhubaneswar News
Kendrapada: A large number of the farmers and fishermen in the mangrove forest-covered seaside villages under Mahakalapada assembly segment in Kendrapara district voted against BJD as they were denied land pattas (deeds) under the Forest Right Act to hand over their land to set up a steel plant.
Most of the villages under Ramanagar, Kharinashi and Batighar gram panchayats are covered with mangrove forests and under the Forest Right Act, no forest land can be given to anyone until all the rights of the people in the area are recognised and their consent is given to the project. This is the requirement of the law, acknowledged further by an environment ministry order of August 3, 2009.
This area is for its betel, cashew and paddy cultivation. The local forest caters to the needs of the people for fuel, housing material and other forest produce.
