Farmer suffers ‘crop loss’, kills self in Jajpur

Kendrapada: A 53-year-old farmer killed himself in Jajpur district on Thursday evening after allegedly suffering crop loss due to unseasonal rain. The deceased, identified as Maheswar Jena from Madhapur village in Dasarathpur block, was found hanging from a tree near his village.Jena had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from local moneylenders to cultivate paddy on his three-acre land in Jan. However, five days of continuous rainfall in late March destroyed his crops, leaving him unable to repay the loan.“My husband took this extreme step due to crop failure and mounting pressure from moneylenders,” said his widow Minu Jena, a mother of four — two sons and two daughters. “We are now staring at an uncertain future,” she said.Local farm leader Umesh Chandra Singh said, “Hundreds of farmers had invested heavily in summer paddy cultivation, expecting a bumper harvest in May. The untimely rain has left many in distress.” Dasarathpur tehsildar Subranshu Sahu said the local revenue inspector has been directed to investigate the matter. “Further action will be taken based on the report,” Sahu said.
