Farmer dies of shock over crop loss in Jagatsinghpur | Bhubaneswar News

Kendrapada: A 69-year-old paddy farmer died of heart attack in Jagatsinghpur district on Thursday evening apparently distressed over damage to his harvest-ready crops due to the recent unseasonal rain.
The incident came to light a day after a farmer died by suicide in Ganjam and another died of shock in Kendrapada due to crop loss.
Dhruba Charan Swain of Chandapur village under Naugaon block suffered a heart attack after finding his ripe paddy crops damaged in the rain, family members said on Friday. He was first admitted to the community health centre (CHC) at Naugaon and later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, where doctors declared him dead.
“My husband died of cardiac arrest due to crop loss. He was quite upset. If there had been no rain, we would be harvesting paddy in the first week of Jan. We are groping in the dark now,” said a forlorn Parbati, wife of Swain. The couple have two daughters.
“The deceased farmer, had taken hefty loans from some local moneylenders, to raise paddy crops over three acres of land. However, due to untimely rain, the crop was ruined. Crop loss is the main reason for his death,” said Ranjan Swain, a villager.
When contacted, additional district magistrate (ADM), Sambit Rout, said, “After getting information, we directed the tehsildar of Naugaon to investigate the matter. After getting the report, the district administration will take proper steps to help the family members of the deceased farmer.”
“Hundreds of farmers spent a lot to raise paddy crops after purchasing seeds and fertilisers at higher prices. Many hoped to harvest bumper crops within a week, but untimely rain damaged their produce. Many farmers are in distress. The authorities should provide succour to all the rain-hit farmers as soon as possible. A large number of farmers are not covered by any insurance companies to receive compensation,” said Umesh Chandra Singh, a local farmer leader.
