Farmer arrested for killing wife | Bhubaneswar News

Rourkela: A 50-year-old farmer was arrested by Talsara police in Sundargarh district for allegedly killing his wife after an argument over money. The incident took place on Wednesday morning in Dumermuda Dipa forest near Hutupani village.
The accused, Rupanand Singh, allegedly stoned his wife Durgabati Singh (45) to death when she refused to give him money from the proceeds of their recently sold ancestral farmland. She was saving the money for her elder son’s marriage.
Police sources revealed that Rupanand, who had lost his first wife, had married Durgabati, his deceased elder brother’s widow, about a year after his brother’s death. The couple lived with their children from their previous marriages – Rupanand’s 15-year-old son and Durgabati’s two children, aged 27 and 24.
Tensions between the couple had reportedly escalated in recent weeks after Rupanand forcibly took money from Durgabati to purchase a two-wheeler and had been demanding more money, including her Subhadra savings.
On Wednesday, police said the couple had gone to collect mahua flowers in the forest when an argument broke out over money. In a fit of rage, Rupanand allegedly hit Durgabati on the head with a stone, killing her on the spot.
The matter came to light when Durgabati’s elder son learnt about the incident and informed a local homeguard, who then alerted Talsara police. A police team, along with scientific experts, visited the crime scene, recovered the murder weapon and sent the body for a post-mortem. “We have arrested the accused,” P Sagar, inspector in-charge of Talsara police station, said.
