Family members of elderly woman donate her eyes after her death

Berhampur: Family members of a 75-year-old woman donated her eyes after she passed away due to age-related ailments at her residence at Prem Nagar here on Saturday.
After her death, members of a Berhampur-based organisation motivated her family members to donate her eyes. “We promptly agreed on their proposal to donate her eyes to the eye bank at MKCG Medical College and Hospital,” said Prabhakar Rao, a son of the deceased. She is survived by two sons and two daughters.
A two-member team from the eye department of the medical college visited her home and collected both corneas of the deceased. The corneas would be transplanted in two patients. “Till the transplantation, they would be preserved in the eye bank,” said Sruti Devangan, a member of the doctors’ team.
“It was the third consecutive day and six times this month that family members of the deceased in silk city donated their eyes due to the motivation of our members,” said J Suresh, director of the eye donation motivation team of the organisation.
He said the club members have created awareness among the people for organ donations for the past few years. “Due to our motivation, family members of around 500 people have donated their eyes after their deaths,” he said. “The first eye donation was in 2000. Several persons have also pledged to donate their eyes,” he added.
