Extortion: Man posing as deputy CM’s aide arrested in extortion case | Bhubaneswar News
Berhampur: A 40-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly extorting money from the child development project officer (CDPO) at Sorada in Ganjam district last month by posing as the personal assistant of deputy chief minister Pravati Parida.
The accused was identified as Janaki Ballav Patnaik of Ratanpur under Sorada police station limits. “He was nabbed from his village,” Anil Kumar Parida, inspector in-charge of Sorada police station, said.
Police said last month, Patnaik called up the CDPO, Sarojini Behera, and introduced himself as the deputy CM’s personal assistant.He then claimed that the minister has received several allegations against the CDPO and demanded Rs 2 lakh. Behera paid him Rs 1.50 lakh on June 21 through an online payment mode. But she grew suspicious when he demanded more money. Subsequently, Patnaik was arrested following a complaint by Behera.
Police investigation has revealed that Patnaik might have cheated several individuals, including job-seekers in and around the district.
