Exploring the frontiers of science at IISc Open Day in Bengaluru | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: Indian Institute of Science (IISc), one of the premier science institutions of the country, opened its gates Saturday to thousands of eager visitors during its much-anticipated Open Day.
The annual event, which was about sparking curiosity and making science accessible to all, transformed the campus into a hub of interactive exhibits, hands-on experiments, and groundbreaking research showcases, drawing students, professionals, and science enthusiasts alike. From aerospace wonders to cybersecurity puzzles, every corner of IISc buzzed with excitement as visitors immersed themselves in cutting-edge scientific innovations.
Among the many highlights of the day, the IST Lab led by Prof Ashish Verma conducted a public opinion survey on Bengaluru’s transportation priorities. With recent fare hikes by BMTC and BMRCL in mind, 200 participants weighed in on the future of urban mobility. An overwhelming 183 votes favoured improving public transport over expanding roads and flyovers, while only 12 supported more road infrastructure. Five remained neutral. To ensure informed decisions, participants received insights into public transport initiatives and the financial implications of road expansions before casting vote.
Beyond thought-provoking discussions, visitors got a rare behind-the-scenes look at research in action. For Preethi Gupta, a green building sustainability consultant, Open Day was a dream come true. “I always wanted to study at IISc but never got the chance. Being here, seeing the research up close, is the next best thing! One day just isn’t enough to take it all in.”
Returning visitor Nambiyappan, an engineer in the construction industry, made sure to bring his family this time around. “Last year, I had to leave early for work. This time, I brought my wife and son along to fully explore the event. The cybersecurity and sustainable development puzzles were fascinating, and I was especially drawn to the transportation efficiency models.”
Young minds were equally captivated. Aditya, a seventh grader from Dollars Colony, couldn’t get enough of the aerospace section. “The engine models were amazing! I love aircraft, and seeing the science behind them up close was incredible. I also played some fun science games. I’d love to come back next year.”
For senior visitors, the event was both nostalgic and inspiring. Vishnu Shankarappa Waghmare, who completed his MS in nuclear physics 60 years ago, attended with his granddaughter. “My curiosity for science never faded. It’s incredible to see how much has changed and evolved. IISc continues to push the boundaries of knowledge,” he said.
BR Vismaya, a second-year student of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, said: “The campus is huge and fascinating — each building has its own significance, and the research here uses unique and advanced methodologies. From aerospace engineering to public transport solutions, the innovative approaches I’ve seen today are truly inspiring. It’s an experience that broadens your perspective on how technology is shaping the future.”
