Exciting New Leopard Arrivals at Rourkela Zoo from Pune | Bhubaneswar News
Rourkela: The Indira Gandhi Park Zoo of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), welcomed two leopards, a male and a female, on November 21, 2024. The big cats were transferred from the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park in Pune, Maharashtra, under a Central Zoo Authority-approved exchange programme.
In exchange, the Pune zoo contributed one male and three female four-horned antelopes.The transfer process was overseen by Avijit Biswas, deputy general manager (horticulture) and in-charge, ZDP, and his team at IG Park Zoo.
In a press release on Saturday evening, RSP informed about the two leopards in Indira Gandhi Park Zoo. “It is noteworthy that a series of initiatives is being implemented under the attentive guidance of Atanu Bhowmick, director in-charge, RSP, to enhance the quality of life and provide more recreational opportunities for the residents of the Steel Township,” said the release.
“The leopards were transported over 1,700 kilometres in a specially equipped truck to ensure their safety and comfort during the journey. The male leopard is approximately 8 years old, while the female is around 7 years old. Both animals are fitted with transponders for identification and monitoring,” said the release.
“Upon arrival, the leopards were placed in quarantine for a 21-day observation period. Thereafter, they will be accessible for public viewing. The leopards are adjusting well to their new environment,” said the release.
