Excise Stations: Proposal to Open 25 More Excise Stations in Odisha | Bhubaneswar News


Bhubaneswar: Excise department on Saturday sent a proposal to the govt to set up 25 more excise stations in the state to check the illegal manufacturing and sale of country liquor and keep tabs on banned narcotics. The move comes after the recent hooch tragedy in Ganjam in which three persons have died after consuming spurious liquor. So far, 16 people have been arrested in connection with the incident.A joint crackdown by excise and police department began on illegal liquor manufacturing units across the state after the hooch deaths.
“For effective enforcement and to make excise administration more efficient by strengthening enforcement activities under excise and Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, the decision has been taken. This will help counter excise-related problems like cross-border infiltration of liquor, illegal transportation, storage, sale and illicit distillation of liquor, other NDPS items and to check hooch tragedy… a proposal to open 25 excise stations in different districts has been proposed,” read a letter from the excise directorate.
The new excise stations will come up in Cuttack, Jagatisnghpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Jajpur, Bhubaneswar, Khurda, Nayagarh, Puri, Ganjam, Berhampur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Rourkela. Ganjam, Balasore and Berhampur will have three more excise stations each, while Cuttack and Mayurbhanj will have two each. The rest will have one each.
The department has asked excise superintendents to examine the feasibility for opening new stations based on geographical size of each station, inaccessibility of far-flung areas, vulnerability to liquor distillation and supply from neighbouring district.
