Ex-Sena corporator’s WhatsApp a/c hacked

Thane: Former Shiv Sena corporator from Thane’s Balkum area, Sanjay Bhoir, fell victim to cybercrime after his mobile number and WhatsApp account were hacked on Friday.
Fraudsters used his WhatsApp to send messages to several contacts, requesting Rs 45,000. The incident came to light on Friday, prompting Bhoir to file a complaint at the Kapurbawdi police station. The police registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators behind the hack.
Bhoir was alerted to the fraud when several acquaintances received suspicious messages seeking money. Many of them contacted him on an alternate number to verify the request. Upon realising his WhatsApp account was compromised, Bhoir clarified he does not use any mobile applications for financial transactions and did not make any such calls or requests.
Concerned about the misuse of his identity, Bhoir approached the police and lodged a complaint. It is likely he may have clicked a malicious link that could have led to the hacking. Things will become clearer with further probe. — Nishikant Karlikar
