Elephant Death: Live Wires Laid To Shield Farmland Kills Elephant | Bhubaneswar News


Bhubaneswar/Baripada: A female elephant aged around 14 died on Thursday morning after coming in contact with live electrical wires laid to safeguard paddy fields at Jamasuli village in Betanati forest range in Mayurbhanj district.
According to sources, a herd of 11 wild elephants was passing through the Badampur section area, which comes under the jurisdiction of Betanati forest range when the female elephant, who was aged around 14, got separated from the herd and ventured into Jamasuli.
Upon receiving information, forest department officials arrived at the scene and started a thorough investigation into the incident.
A Uma Mahesh, divisional forest officer of Baripada, said preliminary inquiry points towards electrocution as the cause of death.
“A live wire was found entangled with the elephant’s trunk. We will conduct an autopsy to ascertain the exact reason behind its death,” he added.
