East Central Railway Sets Record in Transporting Shahi Litchis | Patna News – Times of India

Patna: The East Central Railway (ECR) has made a record loading of state’s world-famous ‘Shahi litchis’ from its Sonepur and Samastipur divisions in the current 2024-25 fiscal, yielding a revenue of Rs 42 lakh so far for the railways. The railways started loading of litchi from May 15, and it has so far transported 8,328.43 quintal of the juicy fruit to far-off places from the state.
According to Sonepur divisional railway manager (DRM) Vivek Bhushan Sood, Muzaffarpur station has been made the pivotal point for loading the litchi boxes under the direct supervision of a nodal officer deployed at the station to coordinate with the farmers and businessmen for hassle-free transportation of the litchi from Muzaffarpur station.He said the Muzaffarpur booking-cum-loading centre has been functioning round the clock for the convenience of the ‘litchi’ producers.
Sonepur division has alone transported 6,340 quintals of litchi so far, earning a revenue of Rs 32 lakh for the railways. While railways has reserved the luggage van of the Jayanagar-Lokmanya Tilak Pawan Express exclusively for loading litchi boxes to Mumbai from Muzaffarpur, litchi boxes are being transported to Rajkot, Jaipur, Surat, Amritsar and Bhusawal in large quantities through luggage parcel vans of other trains, the DRM said.
According to Samastipur DRM Vinay Srivastava, the railways has made litchi loading points in the Samastipur division for the first time. The division has successfully loaded 1,988.43 quintal litchis from Samastipur earning Rs 10 lakh revenue so far, he said, adding ‘litchi’ boxes were being booked from Samastipur as ‘foreign parcel traffic’ (transportation from one zone to another) on a priority to different directions during the past one month.
Sources said summer’s favourite Shahi litchi from north Bihar was given the GI tag in 2018 making it the fourth agricultural produce to get the coveted GI tag after Katarni Rice, Jardalu Mango and Magahi Paan from the state.
