Bhubaneswar: A tonne of old TV sets make up the bulk of around 10 tonne of e-waste that has piled up at the junkyard in city’s Nayapalli area and will be auctioned soon, officials said.
The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has floated a tender to dispose of e-waste. Electric bulbs and wires and old computers and their accessories together make up another major chunk of e-waste.

“We have separate containers for household hazardous waste, which include all kinds of electronic waste. They may be defunct batteries, home appliances and children’s playing gadgets. Out of 435 waste collecting vehicles, around 400 have separate containers to receive e-waste, which are taken straight to the e-hub at Nayapalli,” said Manaranjan Sahu, BMC deputy commissioner, sanitation.
In its drive to collect e-waste, the civic body has received lukewarm response from govt institutions. The BMC gets good response from private offices and individuals in terms of giving away their e-waste.
“Govt institutions are slow to hand over e-waste because of cumbersome official procedure involved in clearing the waste. Otherwise, the e-waste stock would have doubled by now,” said a BMC officer.
In July 2022, BMC launched a special drive to collect e-waste. The BMC said it has written letters to all govt institutions to donate their e-waste. Govt offices like the secretariat and directorates have huge e-waste piled up, but they are yet to be inventoried because of cumbersome official procedure. The two top offices incapital, other offices, too, have large quantities of such waste, the officer added.
