Kendrapada: The dreaded Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria was found in water samples from villages in Rajnagar block of Kendrapada district on Friday, where recently two people, including a woman, died after suffering from suspected gastroenteritis.
The deceased have been identified as Saraswati Baral (45) of Belapal village, and Ajit Dehuri (50) of Manapada. Both complained of loose motion and vomiting on Aug 1. Their condition worsened, and they were eventually rushed to the community health centre (CHC) in Rajnagar, where they died. Around 30 villagers in both villages are now suffering from gastroenteritis.
“After the deaths of two people in Rajnagar block, health officials collected water samples from the overhead tanks in both villages for laboratory examination. During the examination, we found E. coli bacteria in the water samples,” said Dr Rashmiranjan Mohanty, medical officer of the Community Health Center (CHC) at Rajnagar.
