Dug-up roads, broken pipelines: Bandra bears the brunt of concretisation works | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: Bandra residents are reeling under numerous troubles arising from the ongoing road concretisation works being carried out by the BMC.
Residents of St Alexious Road in Bandra West are grappling with sewage water flowing on a dug-up road, where concretisation works have been ongoing since Oct last year. They complain that the road works are being carried out in bits and pieces, with workers absent for long periods.
Residents of Perry Cross Road and St John the Baptist Road residents are facing similar problems as the roads have been dug up and the concretisation work is far from complete.
Abbas Nalwalla, secretary of Dharam Jyot No 1 on St Alexious Road, said he has not opened the windows at his residence for the last four months. “The road concretisation work started in Oct 2024, and the workforce deployed by the contractor has been carrying out work erratically. They undertake work continuously for a few days, then vanish for a few days, and later resume work. The workers have damaged the sewer line and the water pipeline too; the sewage water has been flowing on the road,” Nalwalla complained. “The sewage line always had a problem; they should have resolved the sewage line first before pouring concrete on the road. No technical experts are supervising the work. Besides, they have concretised only a 70m stretch so far. This is sheer harassment of citizens,” he added.
The road work on Perry Cross Road has also affected the daily lives of residents. “A water pipeline to a building has been broken seven to eight times, and one by one, all buildings have faced water, electricity and gas problems. Besides, large amounts of water have been wasted, but the contractor employed by the water department does not respond at all,” complained Sujata Kabraji, who lives on Perry Cross Road.
“The road has been dug up for various reasons; first, they carried out work on the stormwater drains, then they dug it up for electricity, and then gas. They don’t install barricades and block the road without giving any notice to residents. The road is now a dirt track and there is a narrow patch of interlocking tiles in the middle. We would have been in trouble if former corporator Asif Zakaria hadn’t come to our help every time,” added Kabraji, who, along with other ALM members, sometimes helps the contractor’s men manage traffic on the road.
Denzil Rego, a resident of St John the Baptist Road, said, “We do understand the difficulties in carrying out this kind of work, but concretisation of only about 75m has been completed so far.” Zakaria said there’s mismanagement as the contractors have sub-contracted the road works.
