Dubai woman says Pune couple duped her of 1cr after promising medical seat

Mumbai: An Indian businesswoman from Dubai has lodged a complaint with Mumbai police stating that a couple cheated her of Rs 1.13 crore by promising her daughter admission to a medical college either in Mumbai or in Pune.
In her complaint lodged at Powai police station on Tuesday, the businesswoman, who holds ‘Overseas Citizen of India’, or OCI, status has accused the couple from Pune — Karan B and his wife Soumya — of fraud. No arrest has been made in the case so far.
The businesswoman had met the couple in Powai in 2023 after he daughter cleared her class 12 exam. The couple had demanded Rs 3 crore to help procure a medical college seat, she has alleged. She has stated that she made an initial payment of Rs 1.13 crore, with the balance to be paid after admission.
The complaint states that after being paid the initial amount, the couple did not respond to her communication. When confronted, they threatened to tarnish her reputation and dared her to try to recover the money, the businessman has aleged.The police have initiated an investigation.
In the complaint, the businesswoman has said: “Believing them, I met them at a hotel in Powai where I paid Rs 1.13 crore in cash after my daughter completed class 12 in 2022. However, they kept delaying the admission…”
With neither any response nor any medical seat, the businesswoman demanded that the couple return her money.
A police officer said that the complainant has proof of giving the money to the couple. “It has been captured on CCTV,” said the officer.
A case was registered after two cheques that had been subsequently issued by the couple bounced. Whenever the businesswoman called them up, they cooked up excuses, the complainant has told the police. “Later, they started threatening her,” said the officer.
A police team is gathering information about the couple residing in Pune before taking action against them.
The businesswoman said that she had befriended the Pune couple in 2019 when she met them during one of their visits to Pune.
