Balasore: A man, under the influence of alcohol, allegedly strangled his mother to death after she refused to serve him fish curry for dinner in Talapada village of Balasore district on Tuesday night, police said.
Arun Mohanty (40) frequently returned home drunk and verbally abused his family members, the police said. On Tuesday night, he returned home and demanded fish curry from his mother, Basanti Mohanty (62), but she said she did not have money to buy fish.This led to a heated argument between the two, with Arun assaulting Basanti and strangling her to death.
Arun’s wife, Kabita, attempted to intervene and save her mother-in-law but was threatened by Arun. Locals rescued Basanti and rushed her to Simulia hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. Villagers caught Arun and handed him over to the police.
Sasanka Sekhar Beura, subdivisional police officer (SDPO) of Balasore, stated that preliminary investigation revealed Arun’s history of alcoholism and frequent disputes with his family.
