Bhubaneswar: A week after chief minister Mohan Majhi’s office employee Chandan Mahapatra was run over by a speeding car near Delta Square here, Nayapalli police on Monday arrested the driver, who was on the run. The accused was identified as Santosh Kumar Swain (32), a resident of Bhubaneswar. Police said Swain was driving his friend’s car that hit 31-year-old Mahapatra near Delta Square on June 11, the day Majhi was named the chief minister of Odisha.
Mahapatra, who had been working in Majhi’s residence office in Bhubaneswar for the last five years, was on his way to the chief minister’s residence when the tragedy struck. The accident occurred hours before BJP declared Majhi as the new chief minister of Odisha. Swain was driving the car on the wrong route. First, he collided head-on with Mahapatra’s bike and later hit two other cars. Mahapatra was rushed to Capital Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, a senior police officer said. Swain, who does not have any specific occupation, had absconded by abandoning the car at the accident spot. TNN
