Bhubaneswar: State police on Wednesday asserted its readiness to counter potential retaliatory action from Maoists following the deaths of 14 rebels, including senior leader Chalapati, during a joint operation involving Odisha and Chhattisgarh police and CRPF forces in the neighbouring state over the past two days.
Police authorities have heightened security measures to prevent Maoist infiltration into Odisha, with increased border surveillance along the boundary with Chhattisgarh. Police have causes to worry due to Maoist resilience in the Kandhamal-Boudh-Kalahandi axis. Despite Chalapati’s death weakening Maoist influence in Odisha, DGP Y B Khurania instructed SPs of Maoist-affected districts not to lower their guard. The deceased included Jairam and Pramod, who were senior Maoist leaders looking after operations in Nuapada and Kalahandi under Chalapati’s supervision, the DGP said.
“We have asked the SPs to remain extremely alert. All measures have been taken to prevent cross-border movements or infiltration by Maoists,” Khurania said after visiting Naxal-affected Kalahandi and Nuapada districts on Wednesday. The encounter site was 5 km from the Nuapada border. Intelligence units have been kept on high alert, monitoring suspicious activities in Naxal-affected districts. Special teams have been positioned at crucial points along the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border to counter infiltration attempts.
Khurania evaluated the left-wing extremism (LWE) situation in Kalahandi and Nuapada districts adjacent to Chhattisgarh. He interacted with anti-Maoist operation personnel, including CRPF officers. Khurania spoke to the personnel of special operation group (SOG) of Nuapada police who were part of the security team in Chhattisgarh.
“With an unwavering resolve to make Kalahandi and Nuapada free from Maoists, I reviewed the LWE operations with senior police & CRPF officers, reinforcing Odisha’s united vision of a safer & brighter future,” Khurania said. He discussed with jawans their learning from anti-Naxal operations and future strategies. He listened to operational challenges faced by personnel and promised to address logistical issues faced by ground staff. The police have been directed to maintain vigilance, especially in forest areas and known Maoist routes.
During the review, officers emphasised improved coordination between security forces. Discussions centred on enhancing real-time intelligence sharing and response capabilities. Officers stressed the need for advanced surveillance equipment and communication systems in border regions.
Police stations in Kalahandi and Nuapada districts have been instructed to enhance their informant networks. Residents are being encouraged to report suspicious activities. The police are collaborating with Chhattisgarh authorities for effective border surveillance. Security forces have mapped potential hideouts and transit routes possibly used by Maoist groups. Areas where Maoists historically sought refuge after major operations are under close observation, police sources said.
