Dolphin: Rare Gangetic Dolphin Rescued from Fishing Net in Paradip Beach | Bhubaneswar News

Dolphin rescued from fishing net

Kendrapada: A rare and endangered Gangetic dolphin (Platanista gangetica), which had got entangled in a fishing net on Paradip beach, was rescued by some locals and fishermen on Monday afternoon and released into the sea. “We rescued the dolphin with the help of two marine fishermen,” said Bhakar Acheri of Paradip. “The dolphin had become weak as a fishing net had got wrapped around its beak.We suspect the animal may have come from the Sundarbans or adjoining rivers,” said Dipani Sutaria, a dolphin researcher.
Some locals also posed for photographs with the animal before its release. Since 2002, five live and dead gangetic river dolphins have been found in Balasore, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts, said Muntaz Khan, another dolphin researcher and assistant professor in zoology, Maa Manikeshwari University, Bhawanipatana.
