DMK leaders urge Naveen to join opposition against Centre’s delimitation plan | Bhubaneswar News
Bhubaneswar: BJD president Naveen Patnaik could attend the March 22 meeting called by Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin against the Centre’s move to redraw boundaries of Lok Sabha constituencies based on current population, DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran said on Tuesday following his meeting with the former Odisha chief minister at his residence here.
“He supports the fight against unfair delimitation,” Maran told the media after he and Tamil Nadu industries minister TRB Rajaa met Naveen.
“He (Naveen) shares our concerns and our fears that the unfair delimitation will be not be good for our states. There are seven states. Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra, Telangana, Odisha and Punjab which will be directly affected by the delimitation, in which our share will get reduced, and the northern states’ share will increase,” Maran pointed out, hinting that Naveen could share his views during the meeting in Chennai.
The former Odisha CM, though, did not clarify whether he would attend the meeting. In a post on X, Naveen wrote, “We had meaningful discussions on contemporary politics and several issues of national interest.”
Stalin on March 7 had also said he had written letters to CMs of seven states, including his Odisha counterpart, Mohan Charan Majhi, calling for “an uncompromising fight against this unfair exercise (delimitation).” Majhi, however, has not responded to the letter so far.
Tuesday’s meeting at Naveen Niwas was also attended by senior BJD leaders Debi Prasad Mishra, Sanjay Das Burma and Pranab Prakash Das. Discussion centred around growing regional concerns over the potential redistribution of parliamentary seats, which could significantly alter political representation across states.
While Naveen’s participation in the Chennai meeting remains undecided, Mishra acknowledged worries over the delimitation’s possible impact. “We share the concern that some states, including Odisha, may stand to lose in this exercise. It should be a fair process for the entire nation,” Mishra told TOI.
Mishra said Naveen will take a decision on whether he would attend the Chennai meeting or send an emissary there. He will take a call soon, the BJD leader said.
The DMK leaders also met Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhakta Charan Das, delivering Stalin’s invitation for the upcoming meeting.
Taking to social media, Rajaa emphasised that the fight against “unfair delimitation” extends beyond Tamil Nadu. “Several states including Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and Punjab will also suffer unfairly,” he wrote, calling for unified opposition to the proposed changes.
