DK Shivakumar defends ‘nut-bolt’ remarks against Sandalwood | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: Oblivious to the widespread criticism of his open ‘threat’ to “tighten nuts and bolts” on the Kannada film industry over its low turnout for state-related issues, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar defended his remarks Tuesday.
While offering to ‘correct’ his style if it has hurt anybody, Shivakumar stood firm on his statement, especially about Sandalwood stars who had distanced themselves from the ongoing Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes).
Stating that his words were in good interest of the Kannada film fraternity, the DCM said, “The industry has hogged the limelight of late due to a few good movies. I am advising them to live up to that recognition in my own village language.”
Responding to those who described Mekedatu padayatra as a Congress initiative, Shivakumar hit back, “Why did the film fraternity go to Hubballi during Kalasa-Banduri struggle? Actor Rajkumar took part in all programmes regardless of the party’s affiliation in the interest of the state and its people. Wouldn’t they see him as a role model?”
“Mekedatu padayatra was not for my gain. It was our collective fight to get potable water to the entire city of Bengaluru. Aren’t they (stars) also living in Bengaluru? We will continue to fight for Karnataka’s rights even if Sandalwood does not extend support. I am aware of their political affiliation, and I am only advising for their good. They are free to ignore my words,” he said.
Asked about no invites being sent to the stars, Shivakumar clarified, “It is indeed a mistake if the invites were not sent out. But isn’t this their (film stars’) festival? Shouldn’t they come together to celebrate this? I also belong to this industry as I operated a touring talkies in the name of Indira Gandhi. Today, our family owns 23 film screens across Bengaluru.”
He revealed that the state govt is planning to host International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFAA) in the city and talks are under way with the organisers.
