Dist admn, millers provide Rs 5L aid to kin of deceased farmer | Bhubaneswar News

Berhampur: Ganjam administration and the millers’ association provided financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to the family members of a 45-year-old farmer who allegedly died of a heart attack after a miller refused to lift his paddy in Sorada block on Monday, citing poor quality.
“While the administration provided Rs 1.50 lakh from the district Red Cross fund, the millers’ association contributed Rs 3.50 lakh to the family members of the deceased, identified as Ganesh Bisoi, on Tuesday,” said additional district magistrate (ADM), Sudhansu Sekhar Bhoi.
Bisoi, of Chakunda village, went to the mandi with 72 quintals of paddy on Monday. Most of his paddy, however, was rejected on the ground that it didn’t fulfil fair average quality (FAQ) norms. He subsequently suffered a heart attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital in Badagarh, where doctors declared him dead.
His family members lodged a complaint at Badagarh police station, alleging he suffered a heart attack following the miller’s alleged refusal to lift his paddy.
Bhoi conducted an inquiry into the farmer’s death on Tuesday, meeting local officials, millers and villagers. “Preliminary inquiry revealed he died of a heart-related ailment,” he said, citing the post-mortem report. “Exact cause of his death would be known only after receiving the viscera report,” he added. The viscera samples were sent for testing to Bhubaneswar.
The ADM said Bisoi received a compensation of Rs 7,650 from the govt as some of his paddy crop was damaged due to the unseasonal rain in Dec last year. “In addition, he also received around Rs 45,000 as crop insurance under PM Fasal Bima Yojana,” he added.
Paddy procurement in Sorada was not hampered due to the death, he said, adding that around 65% of the produce has already been procured from the block so far.
Bhala Chandra Sarangi, a farmer leader, urged the govt to procure all paddy from farmers regardless of its quality.
