Diphtheria: Door-to-door survey to detect diphtheria cases |

Berhampur: Kandhamal district administration launched door-to-door surveillance in areas bordering Andhra Pradesh on Saturday to prevent the spread of diphtheria, which has claimed the lives of six children in Rayagada and Koraput districts.
The auxiliary nurse midwifery (ANM) and accredited social health activist (Asha) workers carried out an intensive drive in Daringbadi, Kotagarh and Tumudibandh blocks to detect children with symptoms of diphtheria.
On Friday, Kandhamal collector Ashish Ishwar Patil directed health officials to launch the drive. As suspected cases of diphtheria were found in neighbouring districts of Rayagada and Kalahandi, the collector asked the health officials to launch a surveillance drive in the border villages to prevent the spread of the disease.
During the drive, they will also administer anti-diphtheria vaccines to children who have not taken it earlier as a precautionary measure, said P K Tripathy, additional district medical officer (family welfare). He said senior health officials would visit border villages on Monday to take stock of the situation.
He said not a single case of diphtheria has been detected in the district so far. Besides the border areas, health officials have also been alerted in other areas, he said.
