DigiYatra: DigiYatra Face Recognition Technology Implemented at Biju Patnaik International Airport | Bhubaneswar News

DigiYatra goes live at city airport, faces to serve as entry passport

Bhubaneswar: For paperless and hassle-free entry into the airport terminal, the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here on Wednesday made DigiYatra live.
With this facility, passengers will no more be required to show identity proof and ticket at the entrance. The DigiYatra system, which is a face recognition technology, will facilitate entry automatically.

“The face recognition device that has been installed at the entrance takes the facial impression. Within seconds, it matches the passenger’s face with the one uploaded in DigiYatra app with Aadhaar number. Once matched, the e-gate that is synchronised with the system opens, thus allowing the passengers in,” said airport director Prasanna Pradhan. He said DigiYatra will make future of air travel very smooth.
The digital facility leads to reduced waiting time at the terminal entrance as well as check-in area. “It is like showing your face and proceeding. Passengers need to be careful in furnishing data, like names, so that they don’t mismatch,” Pradhan added.
At the BPIA, four departure gates have e-gates while eight boarding gates are equipped with face pods. The airport has made modifications at the terminal’s entrance — where tickets and identity proofs are shown — check-in counters, and at the boarding gates. “The face scanning takes between two and five seconds to open the e-gates. The digital data is full-proof and there is no scope of any duplication. There won’t be any issue regarding clarity of identity proofs,” Pradhan added.
Airport officials said at present there are 48 departures and an equal number of arrivals at the airport which is witnessing a daily footfall of more than 14,000 passengers.
In Sept last year, BPIA commissioned in-line baggage screening (ILBS) system. ILBS ensures that one conveyer belt automatically scans the baggage to see if there are incriminating items such as battery, improvised explosive device, inflammable materials that can damage the aircraft.
These are sabotage materials, which are not allowed in the cargo section of the aircraft. In ILBS, no separate x-ray scanning machine is required for respective airlines like it is being done just at the entrance of the arrival lounge and before going in for the check-in counter.
