Bengaluru: Devanga Market, the wholesale hub for silk sarees and textiles in the heart of the city, remained shut for the second consecutive day on Saturday after heaps of debris continued to block the main entrances.Shop owners stood helplessly outside the market, staring at losses with no clear solution in sight.The debris, reportedly around eight truckloads, was unlawfully dumped in front of the shops Friday morning in a bid to evict the shop owners. Both the entry and exit gates were blocked; traders were unable to access their shops or conduct business and suffered huge losses. The situation continued on Saturday too with debris not removed. In fact, a few shop owners managed to climb over the debris and open their shutters to file returns and do GST paperwork. However, the market, located on the Devara Dasimayya Road near Avenue Road, remained practically empty with only a handful of customers brave enough to walk through the rubble. A TOI visit to the site revealed several disappointed customers who had come in search of their favourite shops but turned away after finding the paths blocked. Bharath Jain, a retail textile shop owner, said: “Mine is a retail store right next to the debris dumped. My survival is dependent on the daily sales I have. So I came early in the morning and removed a few debris and made a path for us to just walk. I lost yesterday’s business and I couldn’t afford to lose today’s business as well.”Manoj Baldota, another long-time tenant who owns a wholesale shop, expressed his frustration: “We have been doing the business from 1964 in the same shop. We have never faced any issues till date. I had to clear a few debris to find and open the lock. What kind of treatment is this from the building authorities? We are also open to talk and negotiate if there is any issue.”The shop owners filed a complaint at the Halasur Gate police station, following which instructions were issued to building authorities to clear the debris. Police said they maintained that the debris was dumped as part of planned renovation work. The police pointed out that it was a civil dispute between tenants and owners.
