Today, desire is often suppressed and shaped by external expectations. A movement-based expressive arts therapist and a performer, Brinda Jacob-Janvrin is questioning these constraining ideologies in Spiralling into Desire – the live performance and video art installation. “The play documents a woman’s descent into her deep body to access and retrieve her true autonomy”, said Brinda.
‘Desire is the first thing suppressed to control women’
I have noticed that desire is the first thing that’s suppressed when it comes to controlling women – personally, professionally, and religiously. It has always been said that if you ‘control a woman’s desire, you get to control her’. This inspired me to explore. through this project, how women can reclaim this vital part of themselves.
Desire is not about power over others but power over our well-being

‘The themes of autonomy and desire are universal’
The performance speaks to everyone, not just women. The patriarchal structure dictates what is deemed ‘acceptable’ for each gender. But desire transcends gender roles. It is the compass that helps us nourish our souls and feel alive. It resides in simple yet profound things.
