Deomali witnesses 21% surge in tourist footfall compared to 2023

Koraput: Deomali, the highest peak of the state located in Pottangi block of Koraput district, has witnessed a significant increase in tourist footfall in 2024.
Till Nov, Deomali welcomed 4,80,724 tourists, marking an increase of over 21% compared to the 3,95,710 visitors throughout 2023, officials at the district tourist office said. To meet the growing demand for outdoor adventure activities, the administration set up 100 tents for night camping at Deomali in Oct.
“Recognising Deomali’s potential as a hub for eco-tourism and adventure activities, we decided to provide night camping facilities for visitors. On weekends and holidays, 80 to 90% occupancy is being recorded at the night camping facilities,” said Sukanta Patnaik, block development officer, Pottangi. He added that private camping was banned to address concerns over littering and unruly behaviour.
“Tourists love spending nights in the tents to enjoy the weather, and there is great demand for the facilities,” said Susanta Padaka, one of the staff members managing the camping facilities. The tents are managed by a team of 12 tribal youths, who earn monthly salaries ranging from Rs 9,000 to Rs 12,000.
Ajit Patra, a Koraput-based activist, said, “With such impactful initiatives, Deomali not only highlights the natural beauty of Eastern Ghats but also sets an example of how tourism can be a catalyst for community development.”
