Dense fog warning for 4 dists for two days
Bhubaneswar: A dense fog warning has been issued by IMD for several districts for the next two days, with cold conditions expected to persist across the state.
According to the IMD bulletin, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal and Koraput districts are likely to experience dense fog at isolated places on Saturday. In response, the special relief commissioner’s office has directed district collectors and SPs to regulate vehicular movement on highways to prevent accidents.
G Udayagiri in Kandhamal district remained the coldest place in the state for the second consecutive day, recording 4.8 degrees Celsius. Other hill stations, including Similiguda and Daringbadi, also reported temperatures below 10C, severely affecting life.
In several places in Kandhamal, people were seen huddling around bonfires along the roads to beat the cold. “It is very difficult to sit in the open without a fire,” said a watchman in G Udayagiri.
Dense fog also engulfed Phulbani, which recorded 7.5C, reducing visibility to 50 metres. Shallow to moderate fog was also seen at Gopalpur in Ganjam district.
In western Odisha, Rourkela witnessed a sharp temperature drop to 7.2C. Jharsuguda saw the highest 4.2-degree deviation from normal, dropping to 7.8C. The city recorded 14C, one degree below normal.
“There will be no significant change in the prevailing cold conditions for the next two days,” said Sanjeev Dwivedi, scientist at the regional IMD centre. “However, minimum temperatures are expected to rise by 2-3C thereafter.”
