Bhubaneswar: As many as 175 new dengue cases were reported in the state in the last 24 hours, with the highest 59 cases detected in Sundargarh district, followed by the capital city with 14.
“We are now focusing on Sundargarh district and Bhubaneswar to contain the dengue cases. Other districts are reporting fewer cases,” said director of public health, Nilakantha Mishra.

He said they are conducting awareness programmes, disease surveillance in the affected localities, reduction of mosquito breeding sources and related activities to contain the cases. “Steps have been taken for the diagnosis and treatment of dengue patients at different govt hospitals,” he added.
More than 1,500 new dengue cases have been reported in the past two weeks across the state. Two cities — Rourkela and Bhubaneswar — account for half of the total 3,470 dengue cases reported in the state so far.
After the spurt in dengue cases in Rourkela, the health and family welfare department has sent a three-member team, including two entomologists, to assess the risk and devise strategies to contain the spread of the disease.
A health official said they have deployed fogging machines in the capital city to spray anti-larvae chemicals in phases. Several dengue cases are being reported from posh localities in the city. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation officials attributed the reason to several households allegedly not taking preventive steps to check breeding of larvae. Many houses in the hotspot localities were found with mosquito larvae.
Public health experts said residents should destroy breeding places of Aedes mosquitoes. “People residing in cities and periphery areas should know that more mosquitoes grow in their houses compared to outside. They should clean the mosquito breeding sources regularly,” said a health official.
