Deep brain stimulation surgery at IMS & SUM hospital

Bhubaneswar: The Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan deemed to be university (SOA) here, undertook deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery to treat Parkinson’s Disease, a neurodegenerative disease and a movement disorder.
This surgery mostly addresses the movement symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease and improves some non-motor symptoms, including sleep and pain, said Dr Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, noted neurosurgeon and SOA’s principal adviser (health sciences).
“Though DBS will not cure the progression of the disease, it will, however, improve the quality of life of advanced PD patients,” said Mahapatra.
The surgery was conducted on a 36-year-old woman who was suffering from Parkinson’s Disease. Dr Soubhagya Panigrahi, professor and head of the department of neurosurgery, said the surgery needed seven to eight hours. TNN
