Bhubaneswar: Over 70 platoons of police force are likely to be deployed at Jagannath temple in Puri for smooth conduct of Debasnan Purnima on June 22. Puri SP Pinak Mishra held a preparatory meeting with his officers on Tuesday.
“The safety of devotees, crowd control and traffic regulation are our priority areas. Since we expect a large number of devotees, certain restrictions on their movements in the temple will be imposed.Like the previous years, devotees will be allowed to enter the temple from the main gate and exit through the north gate,” Mishra said.
The police have roped in some NGOs whose volunteers will assist the police in crowd control and traffic management. The volunteers have been advised to provide drinking water to devotees in queues. The SP briefed the volunteers about their roles and responsibilities.
Sources in the temple said at least 22 types of rituals will be performed on Debasnan Purnima. The sibling deities — Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra — would be given a ceremonial bath on the Snan Mandap (bathing dais) on the shrine premises and would appear in Hati Besha, donning elephant attire in the evening.
In a related development, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) convened a meeting with servitors of Daitapati Nijog, who play a pivotal role in the conduct of rituals from Debasnan Purnima to Rath Yatra on July 7. The shrine administration sought the cooperation of servitors for timely conduct of rituals. This time, Rath Yatra will be a challenging affair as the rituals of two preceding days of the festival would be performed on July 7. Nabajouban Darshan and Netra Utsav are usually observed on two separate days preceding the Rath Yatra. This year, the rituals of Nabajauban Darshan and Netra Utsav will be performed on the same day the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra are pulled. Such a thing happened last in 1971.
“We are ready for the smooth conduct of all rituals on July 7. Arrangements have already started. More such meetings will be held for better coordination and execution of plans. The temple managing committee will convene a meeting on Wednesday,” a senior temple official said.
