Cyclist killed in accident on NH-16

Balasore: A 50-year-old cyclist was killed after being hit by a truck near Bidu on National Highway-16 under Soro police station limits in Balasore district on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Abhimanyu Mallick, a resident of Dandaharipur village under Bahanaga block in the district.
According to sources, the victim was en route to Barikpur market when the accident occurred. Witnesses said the truck ran over Mallick, killing him on the spot due to severe injuries.
Following the incident, tension prevailed in the area as agitated villagers blocked the highway, demanding immediate compensation for the victim’s family. The blockade led to a long traffic jam, leaving vehicles stranded on both sides of the road.
Upon receiving the information, Soro police and additional tehsildar Daitari Mallick rushed to the spot and assured the villagers of appropriate action against the responsible driver and financial support for the bereaved family. The protest was called off after the Indian Red Cross Society assured an interim relief of Rs 10,000 to the victim’s kin.
Police have seized the body and sent it for postmortem. The truck involved in the accident has been seized. A case has been registered at Soro police station and an investigation is currently underway to determine whether the driver was speeding or driving negligently at the time of the accident.
