Cyber scam thwarted: City cops recover record 11cr

Mumbai: A cyber criminal carefully studied the communication style of a Powai-based Solar and Wind Mill manufacturing company with their bank before executing an email spoofing attack that led to an unauthorised transfer of Rs 11.34 crore on Thursday morning. Swift action following the company’s report to the 1930 Cyber Helpline resulted in freezing Rs11.2 crore from the fraudulent accounts.
The company’s chief accountant discovered the fraud whilst reviewing the firm’s monetary transactions and bank account debits and reported the matter to the West Cyber unit.
An unknown person had hacked the company’s bank-linked email ID. DCP (Mumbai-Cyber) Datta Nalawade said that a team comprising senior inspector Dattaram Chavan, inspector Nivruti Bawaskar and other staff members blocked eight fraudulent accounts and recovered Rs 11.2 crore within three hours of the incident. It was the largest sum recovered by Mumbai’s cyber team, police said.
The investigation to locate the perpetrator continues.
The cyber police have successfully recovered Rs160 crore in 2024 and Rs49.25 crore in 2025 (Jan to till date).
