Customs seizes gold worth 7cr at airport in 11 smuggling cases | Mumbai News – Times of India
Mumbai: The airport commissionerate, Mumbai Customs zone-III, seized 10.8 kg gold valued at nearly Rs 7 crore in 11 cases recently.
Gold was found concealed in various forms — gold dust in wax, crude jewellery, bars in an ingenious way in pockets, on the accused passengers.
One person has been arrested for gold smuggling and 6.5 kg of gold worth 3.83 crore seized from the flyer.The air intelligence unit of customs arrested Moinuddin Shakil Zordarwala (24), a south Mumbai resident who had arrived from Sharjah. Asked if he were carrying any dutiable goods, he replied in the negative. A search yielded the contraband cleverly concealed in pockets of his jeans.
In another case, two Indians travelling from Sharjah to Mumbai and from Mumbai to Kathmandu were found carrying 24 karat gold dust weighing over 7kg concealed in their trousers and on their persons, said the officials. —S Ahmed Ali
