Criminal hacked to death in Ganjam village

Berhampur: A 48-year-old criminal was hacked to death by a group of miscreants in Haripur village in Ganjam district on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, identified as Rabindra Nathi Das alias Khandi Rabi, was allegedly involved in 18 heinous crimes, including two murders, attempted murder, dacoity and robberies in areas under Khallikote police station limits, police sources said. Authorities are verifying pending cases against him in other police stations in the district.
Das was recently released on bail. Police said at least four miscreants arrived on motorcycles and attacked him with a sharp weapon as he was about to leave his house. Before the assault, the assailants lobbed bombs near his residence. After murdering him, they fled the scene.
Senior police officers rushed to the spot after getting information and recovered the body. “Search operations have been intensified to apprehend the perpetrators,” said Ganjam SP Subhendu Patra.
Preliminary investigations suggest that past enmity with his nephew could be the motive behind the murder. Last year, Das allegedly attacked one of his nephews, leaving him injured. “Two of the four attackers have been identified as the deceased’s nephews,” said Ramesh Chandra Pradhan, IIC of Khallikote police station.
Post-mortem was conducted at MKCG Medical College here. Security forces have been deployed in the village as a precautionary measure. “We are keeping a close watch on the situation,” said Pradhan.
