Cricket fever and rain choke roads for 6 hours in Bengaluru | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: Cricket frenzy along with heavy rain and broken roads threw traffic and Metro rail operations out of gear in the central part of the city for more than six hours Saturday evening.Vehicles literally crawled on MG Road, Residency Road, Richmond Road, Cubbon Road and KH Road (Double Road), leaving bikers with no option than to ride on pavements. “Since this was the first IPL match in the city after it resumed following the Indo-Pak conflict and in the backdrop of Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket, thousands of fans thronged M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The rain also brought traffic to a halt,” a police officer said. A few motorists complained they took more than 30 minutes to cover a less than 2km stretch between Richmond Circle and Brigade Road junction and traffic cops were nowhere in sight. Those travelling to KIA through MG Road were badly hit as they got delayed by nearly an hour.Metro trains skipped two stations for an hourNamma Metro operations were affected as thousands of cricket fans flooded Cubbon Park and MG Road stations, forcing trains to skip halts at these stations for nearly an hour. BMRCL said between 6:15pm and 7:10pm, trains skipped stops at these stations as a crowd-management measure after exiting passengers took shelter inside due to rain. As the stations became overcrowded, some trains skipped after making announcements, prioritising passenger safety.
